Many of the legal rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons are explained in a new brochure published by the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA).
The free brochure explains protections granted under the Illinois Human Rights Act, which, since January 1, 2006, includes "sexual orientation." The law now extends protections against discrimination in employment, real estate transactions, financial credit and public accommodations to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons.
Other issues covered in the brochure are same-sex marriage and adoption, opportunities to register as same-sex partners, and domestic violence protections. It also covers work-related issues including domestic partner benefits granted by employers and sexual harassment at work. The brochure contains information about what actions to take if a person is the victim of a hate crime, as well as the various governmental bodies where a complaint based on sexual harassment or discrimination can be lodged.
